The Origin of the Term Art Brut
The term Art Brut was coined in 1945 by French painter Jean Dubuffet, who with this definition wanted to value works created by self-taught artists, people on the margins of society or simply strangers to the institutional art world.
Dubuffet described Art Brut as "raw" art, spontaneous, born from the inner urge to create, without worrying about imitating styles, trends or established techniques. It's authentic art, free from any cultural conditioning, where the artist draws inspiration exclusively from their inner world.

Ugly Art is not "ugly" in the common sense of the word, but "pure", uncontaminated, sincere. It's a form of resistance to conventional beauty.
From Art Brut to Outsider Art
Over time, the concept of Art Brut has expanded and spread also through the English term Outsider Art, coined in 1972 by critic Roger Cardinal.
Today it includes not only the so-called "art irregulars", but also naive painters and illustrators, self-taught creators and artists who experiment with personal languages far from market trends.
